HCG Diet

A Comprehensive review of our HCG Weight Loss Program

How The Program Works

The body has many types of fat, but we are only going to concern ourselves with 2 types:
Brown fat – which is healthy fat, and
White fat – which is the stuff we all hate.

BROWN FAT

Brown fat is the thin layer of fat that we have covering our whole body.  This is GOOD fat.  Think of it as the body’s debit account for energy storage.   Under ideal circumstances, when we eat, our body will fill our blood stream with nutrients, and then fill the brown fat stores, and then the body will dump all the other nutrients.

As we go from meal to meal, we will burn the nutrients out of the blood stream in about an hour.  This will happen quicker if we are exercising vigorously.  As the body needs more energy, it will pull nutrients from the brown fat into the blood stream.  When we eat again, the body will refill the brown fat stores.  We are extremely efficient at breaking down and restoring our brown fat reserves.  Most people will have between 10% to 15% of their body weight as healthy fat.

An average person can burn all their healthy fat reserves in about a week or two if they quit eating.  When they start eating again, the body can replenish the healthy fat reserves in about a week.

When your brown fat reserves are depleted, your body will trigger your hunger response.  This is a fact that I will call attention to later in this letter.

WHITE FAT

This is the stuff we all HATE!  It accumulates around the belly, on the butt, the hips, under the arms, on the chest, under the chin, and everywhere else.  Unfortunately we live in a society that is obsessed with “skinny.”  It may not be fair, it is certainly not logical and it is never pleasant to those of us who are fat.

THIS NEXT PART IS VERY IMPORTANT so read carefully:  The body will only store white fat when we have elevated levels of insulin in our blood stream.  It is physiologically IMPOSSIBLE for your body to store white fat if you do not have elevated levels of insulin in your blood.  When we eat sugar, starches or processed foods, we are injecting sugars into our blood stream.  The pancreas then excretes insulin into the blood stream to keep us from going into a coma.  Once there are elevated levels of insulin in the blood, this is a signal for the body to store white fat.

The reason our body stores white fat when insulin is present is because, for hundreds of years, we went through a famine every year.  This famine was called winter.  In the fall, when the fruits are ripe, and the corn and potatoes are harvested, we are eating lots of grains, sugars and starches.  This is a signal to the body that we are getting ready for winter and that we need to store white fat.

The problem we face in today’s society is that we eat sugars, starches, and processed foods ALL THE TIME, so we have elevated levels of insulin in our blood all the time.  Our bodies are constantly storing white fat.  On average, most Americans will gain about 5lbs per year.

HOW DO WE GET RID OF WHITE FAT

There are only 2 ways to get rid of white fat:

Way # 1 – Live Through A Famine

And by this, I mean that you need to move to a place where there is NO FOOD and you have to LITERALLY live through a famine.  If there is ANY food available, you will not succeed.  All diet programs are a form of self imposed famine.  “Eat less, exercise more” is the standard mantra of the medical profession and the weight loss community in general.  If this were truly the way to lose white fat, we would all be A LOT skinnier.  The fact is that “Eat Less, Exercise More” does not work when losing white fat.  It only works to lose healthy brown fat.  “Eat Less Exercise More” is an excellent way to maintain your weight once you lose all your white fat, but medically and statistically speaking…it does not work.

WHY THIS DOES NOT WORK
When we starve our body, here is what happens:
1st we use up all our healthy brown fat

You will get VERY hungry and irritable and think about food ALL THE TIME

The body will now go into the infamous “starvation mode” and will lower your metabolism.  You will feel listless, tired and not be able to concentrate. If you are lucky enough to eat less calories than your body burns, then and only then will you begin to burn white fat, but your body will also burn muscle at the same rate.  The reason it does this is because muscle burns fat and our body is trying to survive as long as possible…so it will burn fat and muscle at the same rate so you will live as long as possible before you die of starvation.

When we go off the diet, our body will INSTANTLY restore all the healthy brown fat we have lost (so we will gain 10 to 15lbs within a few days), then our body will spend the next 3 weeks packing as much white fat on as it possibly can.  Most people will end up gaining at least as much fat as they lost.  The bad news is that they now have less muscle, so they will gain even more fat as time goes on and they are less equipped to lose it.

If you are like me and 150 million other Americans, this will all sound too familiar.

WAY # 2 – GET PREGNANT (Or use HCG to trick your body into thinking it is pregnant)

With the HCG Weight Loss Protocol we are tricking your body into thinking that there is a fetus present.  When a woman is pregnant, the placenta and the fetus produce a chemical called HCG in HUGE amounts in the body (millions of parts per liter).  A pregnant woman will have literally millions of units of HCG running through her system.

When there is HCG present, the body will no longer follow the normal set of rules for fat usage.  The number one concern now is for the preservation of the fetus…so things happen a little differently.  When HCG is present, the body will stimulate the adrenal gland so that the mother is more alert.  It will also cause the body to produce endorphins so that the mother is happy.  If the mother eats less than she burns, then the body will use the white fat 1st and leave the brown fat and the muscle alone.  The mother must be able to fight or flight, so the body will preserve brown fat stores and the muscle.  Since the white fat stores are almost never used, the body will access this as energy.  This is GREAT NEWS for us!!!

What we do on this diet is to trick the body into thinking that we are pregnant, then we simply starve ourselves.  We will inject .125 ml of HCG into our muscle each day and then eat 500 calories or less per day.

The average man will need about 3500 cal per day to maintain their current weight.  The average woman will need about 2000 cal per day.    If you are only eating 500 cal per day you will lose between ½ and 1 lb of white fat each day!  While on HCG you will not lose any brown fat, and you will not lose any muscle.  I know, because I have done it.  My wife has done it and my parents have done it along with a dozen or so friends and associates.

While on the HCG you should not exercise, you do not need to purchase expensive supplements and you will not spend 100s on prepackaged food.  You will have lots of energy and you will not be hungry.  Please understand that you will have an empty stomach…but you will not be hungry.  Your body will make sure that you have lots of nutrients from your white fat stores in your blood stream all the time.  Since the brown fat is not being used, your hunger response will not be triggered.

How Do You Keep The White Fat From Coming Back?

You have just spent over 40 days starving your body and forcing it to eat 1000s of calories of white fat.  The body will want to replace this fat as soon as possible.  It will take about 21 days for your body to adjust to the fact that it is not starving.  During this phase you will want to eat between 1200 and 1500 calories per day.  It is perfectly OK to eat fat, butter, oil, meats vegetables, and fruits (apples, oranges or Strawberries) in whatever amounts you want.  During this phase, feel free to use your favorite salad dressing on your salads.  You may now eat eggs, pork and turkey.  DO NOT EAT ANY TYPE OF SUGAR OR STARCH DURING THIS PHASE!!!!

Your body cannot store white fat if the insulin level in your blood is low.  It is impossible for your body to store white fat if you give it no sugar and no starch.  For 21 days we will be giving your body lots of food, but NO SUGAR AND NO STARCH.  It will take about 3 weeks for your body to return to a normal metabolic condition.

You MUST weigh yourself each morning.  If you are 2lbs or more from your stopping weight you must immediately do a “Steak Day.”

What Is A Steak Day?

When you get on the scale and you weigh 2lbs or more from you stopping weight, immediately fast from all food until dinner.  You may drink all the tea and water that you want, but eat NO FOOD until dinner.  For dinner you will eat a big steak and an apple or a tomato.  When you get up and weigh in the morning, you will be back down within 2lbs of your stopping weight.  If you do not like steak, then eat several pieces of chicken breast, or drink 2 or 3 protein drinks (make sure they do not have any sugars).

If you are interested in understanding why this works, here is a quick simplistic explanation:

In order for your body to store white fat, the body will increase the level of the fluids in order to suspend the excess nutrients while preparing to store white fat.  The process of storing white fat takes the body about 2 days.  When you get up in the morning and you have excess fluid retention, you immediately fast from eating for 2 meals.  You will be using the nutrients in your blood stream and then you will be using the other nutrients that are suspended in the excess body fluids.  At the end of the day, you will flood the body with protein by eating a big steak.  The body will respond by dumping the excess fluid.  This TOTALLY derails the body’s attempt to store white fat.

The Rest of Your Life

For the rest of your life you will weigh yourself every day.  If at any time you are 2 lbs or more from your stopping weight, you must immediately do your “Steak Day.”

Once you are finished with the 21 day phase, you can begin to SLOWLY introduce starches and sugars back into your diet.  Begin slowly…very slowly.  Start with a piece of toast with breakfast.  Make sure to check you weight the next day and see how you body responded.  If you are within the acceptable range, then you know that you can handle 1 piece of bread a day.  Do the same with other starches and sugars.  I strongly suggest that you start with starchy vegetables 1st, and then move to breads, and then sugars.  If you move slowly, you will be able to introduce all these items back into your regular diet and not gain weight.  It will not take you long to be able to tell where your threshold is with sugars and starches.  You will be surprised how much of these items you can eat and not gain weight.

If you weigh yourself in the morning and you weigh 2 lbs or more from your stopping (target weight) then you must immediately do a steak day.  If you are vigilant in monitoring your weight and doing your steak day when necessary, you will never again carry around unwanted fat.  If you are not vigilant…feel free to visit us again and we will put you on the program.

FAQs

Will I be hungry on only 500 calories per day?
The vast majority of our patients report that they are not hungry while on the program.  While you are on the program, your  blood stream will be full of nutrients and your healthy brown fat will not be depleted, so your hunger mechanism will not be triggered.  You will be surprised at how comfortable you will be on 500 calories a day.

Will I be getting enough nutrients on only 500 calories per day?
Yes.  Your white fat cells have everything that your body needs to function normally.  You will not be tired, or irritable.  In fact, you will feel better and think more clearly than you have in years.

What is HCG?
HCG is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin.  It is a chemical that is produced in every organ in the human body.  It is most prevalent in women when they are pregnant.  The unborn fetus and the placenta will produce millions of parts per liter in the mother’s bodily fluids.  HCG was discovered in the 1920 in pregnant women’s urine.  It was miscategorized as a hormone.  Since then, medical researchers have identified it as a chemical.

Is HCG approved by the Food and Drug Administration?
Yes, the FDA has approved the use of HCG for women who are trying to get pregnant.  In large amounts (much larger amounts than you will be using) HCG increases the frequency of ovulation.  Since we will be using a MUCH smaller amount, this will not be the case with women on the HCG Weight Loss Protocol.

Will this protocol work if I take HCG pills?
No, there are only two effective ways to take HCG so that it will actually reach the hypothalamus.   You must inject it into muscle tissue or take specifically formulated drops under the tongue.  If you ingest HCG in a pill form, your stomach acids will destroy it before it can get to the hypothalamus.  HCG pills will have no effect.

Can I obtain HCG without a prescription?
No.  HCG is considered by the DEA as a controlled substance.  It cannot be legally obtained without a prescription from a licensed health care professional.

Where do you get your HCG from?
We purchase all our HCG from compounding pharmacies in the United States.  We do not purchase any HCG from any pharmaceutical companies outside the US.  We want to be certain that we are providing our patients with the highest quality product.

Why do I need to see the Dr. once a week during the 1st 40 day course?
We need to see you on a regular basis for the 1st 40 day course in order to make sure that you are reacting well to the program.  We often find it necessary to adjust medications as patient’s blood pressure and blood sugars improve.  We also need to build a history with you as a patient in order to assure that the program is being followed.  We find that people are much more successful when they are required to come in each week and make an accounting of the previous week’s progress.

Once you have completed the 1st 40 day program, we do not need to see you as often (should you decide to do more 40 day courses).  We will only need to see you 2 times per month for any additional courses you decide to do.

Are there any side affects associated with HCG?
There are no negative side affects of HCG.  Most people will notice that they become a little light headed if they stand up too fast, or if they engage in any strenuous activities.  This goes away in a few moments and has not been a problem.

What if I have more than 30 to 40 lbs to lose?  Can I stay on the program for more than 40 days?
Yes, you can do as many courses as you would like.  After the 1st 40 days we advise you to do 2 more loading (pig out) days in order to restore any brown fat stores that have been depleted.  Expect to gain 4 to 6 lbs during these 2 days, then you go right back on the 500 cal per day diet and keep on losing.  On each additional course you do, you are only required to come in for a doctor’s visit 2 times each month.

Can I exercise while on the HCG Weight Loss Protocol?
The only exercise that we recommend is a 30 to 40 minute walk each day.  You should not work up a sweat or breathe hard.  If you find it difficult to carry on a normal conversation you are working too hard.

The reason that we do not want to exercise while on the HCG Weight Loss program is because it is hard for your body to break down and convert white fat to energy than it is for your body to convert brown (healthy) fat to energy.  When doing strenuous exercise, you will burn the nutrients out of your blood stream in about 20 minutes.  The body will not be able to break down the white fat fast enough to meet your body’s energy demand, so it will turn to the brown fat and begin to use it.  Once this happens you will get hungry and your weight loss will stop.

Does HCG interact with any prescription Drugs that I may be taking?
HCG is a fairly benign substance and will not interact with any medications that you are currently taking.  If you are taking metabolic steroids, you may not lose weight as fast as you would if you were not taking the medication.

How long has the HCG Weight Loss Protocol been around?
The HCG weight loss protocol was discovered in the early 1960s by DR. A.T.W. SIMEONS in Europe.  He 1st began treating young boys suffering from un-descended testicles.  What he found in addition to these young men developing normally was that they were losing their white unhealthy fat.  After years of observation, he decided to see if HCG would cause the same fat losing condition in obese adults.  Dr. Simeons  found that HCG did in fact cause adults to lose unwanted fat.  Through decades of study and observation, health care professionals around the World have perfected the process to result in the highest level of fat loss.

How does HCG affect men?
The hypothalamus is the same in men and women.  The hypothalamus does not know that you are man or a woman.  It simply picks up markers in the blood and makes decisions based on those blood markers.  When your hypothalamus reads the HCG markers in your blood, it will begin to operate under the same set of rules that it would for a woman who is pregnant.     This is good news because now the body will burn white fat while leaving your metabolism and your brown fat alone.

Will I be more likely to get pregnant while on HCG?
No.  We will only be injecting .125 ml of HCG into your body each day.  This is not enough to cause ovulation.  You will not be any more likely to become pregnant while on HCG as you are when you are not.

What foods can I eat while on the HCG program?
You can eat 500 calories per day.  You should only eat whole fresh fruits and vegetables and lean, non-fatty meats.  The diet is very strict, and if you do not follow it exactly you will not lose as much weight as you could..if any at all.

Note that all visible fat must be carefully removed prior to cooking.  The meat must be weighed raw.  It must be boiled or grilled without additional fat.  You can use food grade mineral oil to cook with.  Your body cannot absorb mineral oil and it will pass right through you.

How much does the program cost?
The HCG program costs are broken out as follows:

Blood work and labs: $206 (if you have had blood work within the last 6 months you do not need to have it done again, just bring a copy of your blood work when you come in for your 1st visit).
1st office visit and physical  $175
5 weekly office visits  $149each
Once you have been through the initial 40 day course, you will only need to pay for the HCG and the regular office visits at $175 each 2 times per month.

Will my insurance company pay for any of this?
The final word on this is always with your insurance company; however we have found that our patient’s insurance companies are paying for the majority of the program.  We will make sure to code your paperwork in such a way that your insurance company will be less likely to deny your claim.

Why can’t I just eat the 500 calorie a day diet without being on the HCG program?
Without the HCG in your body, your hypotolumus will cause your body to burn your brown healthy fat 1st, then it will lower your metabolism.  You will at this point be as hungry as you can be, and you will not have any energy.  If you are lucky enough to eat less calories than you are burning (now that your metabolism has been lowered) your body will begin to burn your white fat and your muscle at the same rate.  Your fat loss will be INCREDIBLY slow, and you will be losing muscle.  This is bad, because your muscle is the engine that burns fat.

Consumer report found that 99% of Americans that dieted were unable to lose weight and keep it off.  We are currently spending over $30 Billion per year trying to lose weight and failing.  Do not waste any more time and money on the “eat less and exercise more” model.  Statistically it has been proven to be a failure.

If I have thyroid problems, will the HCG weight loss program work for me?
Yes, but we will need to make sure that you are medicated so that your body is within normal ranges.  Once that has been accomplished, then you will experience the same weight loss success as anyone else.

Tips and Tricks

Cook With Mineral Oil

You can get food grade mineral oil at Soldotna Professional Pharmacy in Soldotna or at Wal-Mart in Anchorage.  Mineral oil is a petroleum product and the body cannot process it, so it simply passes right through the intestines and is expelled from the body.  It does not harm you in any way.  Mineral oil is used as a mild laxative, so do not get too carried away or you will find yourself in a potentially embarrassing situation.  You can brush it on your meat before cooking, or you can sauté vegetables with it, or you can use it to make salad dressings.

Zero Calorie Salad dressing and Condiments
Fred Meyer carries “Walden Farms” salad dressings and sauces.  Walden Farms products are not kept with the other salad dressings so you will need to ask where it is displayed.  Their sauces and salad dressings have 0 calories and taste good.  These products will help to keep the monotony of the diet to a minimum.

Use Stevia As A Sweetener
Stevia is a natural sweetener that is made from the Stevia plant found in South America.  It is the only non-sugar healthy alternative that I know of.  Everything in Stevia is good for you and it does not do harm to your body.  Splenda and Aspartame are VERY bad for you and will actually stall your weight loss if you use these products.  Make sure that you purchase either “Nu-Stevia” or “Stevia Balance.”  Fred Meyer in Soldotna carries Nu-Stevia.  Nu-Stevia is not bitter and will make this diet much easier to follow.  Some brands of Stevia are simply stevia extract and can be VERY bitter.  I have used both Nu-Stevia and Stevia Balance and I have been happy with both.

Make Your Own Flavored Water
If you like sports drinks and that sort of thing, you can make your own.  Buy unsweetened Kool-Aid and sweeten it with Stevia.  You will have a tasty alternative to water and you will not be introducing unhealthy sweeteners into your body.

What To Do If You Are REALLY Hungry
Purchase some unflavored Metamucil and mix the prescribed amount with twice the amount of your flavored water (above).  You will need to drink it fairly quickly since the Metamucil will thicken.  Make sure you drink lots of water afterward or this will stop you up.  You can also eat celery.  Celery requires your body to burn more energy to break it down than it provides.
