Lapband
Laproscopic adjustable gastric banding has been well received by both doctors and patients alike. Gastric banding dates back to 1991.
However, it wasn’t until 2001 that the lap band was approved for use in the United States. To date over five hundred thousand lap bands have been placed. In 2008 a second band was approved for use in the Untied States. It is called the realize band. There are some differences between the two bands that provide interesting discussions between bariatric surgeons. However, from the patients perspective, both are very effective tools for weight management and to some extent provides improvement in heart burn, also known as GERD.
Gastric banding is performed on an out-patient basis in approximately 35 minutes. This means there is no hospital stay. Since there is no cutting of the intestines, gastric banding is considered one of the safest weight management surgeries. The procedure is well tolerated and most patients can return to work with in 1 week.
